Arran’s history

The land around Arran was once part of the "North Reserve," also called the "Thunder Hill Reserve." It was one of the block settlement areas set aside for Doukhobor immigrants, who arrived in 1899 from Russia's Transcaucasian provinces.

Arran's school opened on November 30, 1914, and the community incorporated as a village on September 21, 1916. It takes its name from the Isle of Arran in Scotland. The school served local children until it closed on June 30, 1994.

On January 1, 2023, Arran gave up its village status, which it had held since 1916, and became a special service area under the Rural Municipality of Livingston No. 331. Southeast of the community stands the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Ascension, a historic site about 9.5 kilometres from Arran.
